Seoulnal
What is Seolnal?
Seolnal is the Korean new year's day.
When is Seolnal?
In 2022, it is February 1st and every year the date of Seolnal is different. Because Seolnal is the lunar new year's day which is based on the lunar calendar. In fact, on the lunar calendar, Seolnal is always on January 1st.
Important Korean National Holidays
Seolnal is the Korean national holiday and one of the most important traditional holidays in one year. Koreans celebrate this new year's day for 3 days; the day before Seolnal, Seolnal, and the day after Seolnal.
What Koreans do on Seolnal
1. Sebea (Korean Traditional Bow)
Sebea is a Korean traditional bow, a big bow. It is kind of a ritual of filial piety. On Seolnal traditionally Koreans visit all their elder relatives and do Sebae to them. It is the first greeting in the new year and through it, Koreans wish them a good new year and health. Through this ritual Sebea, Koreans share well-wishing remarks. Modern Koreans do Sebea still on Seolanl.Sebea is a tradition maintained very well for several centuries. Modern elder who got Sebae from younger families give mostly child money as reward for Sebae and it is called Sebeat Don.
2. Ttokguk
Tteokguk is a typical food Koreans eat on Seolnal. You can notice from the name of this dish what Tteokguk is. Tteok is a Korean traditional food based on rice. Guk is Korean soup. So Tteoguk is Tteok soup. On Seolnal, all people age one year of course and traditionally on this day Koreans eat Tteokguk. So eating Tteoguk is regareded aging one year. So some people say "I don't want to eat Tteokguk" to express "I don't wnat to age."
3. Yutnori
Yutnori is kind of a korean traditional board game. The difference to normal board games is that one set of 4 wood sticks is used for play instead of dice. This wood sticks are called Yut and Nori means play. Yutnori is also good maintained game which modern Koreans enjoy often when families meet on Seolnal.
other traditional games
There are some other traditional games which modern Koreans play seldeom: Jegichagi, Yeonnalligi, Neolttwigi, Pengichigi. They are really traditional and through the change of Korean likfe style and form living, it becomes difficult to play simply. Now when you want to enjoy it, visit the historical places like Gyeongbokgung, Hanko Maeul. There must be these play sets people can experience.
